Jon Ellis

I’ve painted since I was a young boy; for me, painting is a language, a non-verbal form of expression. I strive to convey my emotional response to the subject, whatever it might be. I make no distinction between painting and drawing as both are integral to the process of picture making and are a record of my perception.
My studio works are the result of many hours of observation and study; I draw the subject repeatedly, seeking to find the underlying structure. I then do small painted studies (en plein air) to prepare for the larger work. Sometimes I will repaint a picture several times until I feel I’ve captured something of the feeling I get from the subject.
I paint what is around me; most often landscapes but more recently I’ve explored still life, portraits, and figure compositions. I’m equally at home using acrylics or oils; but drawing always comes first; it’s the foundation of everything that follows.
I’m inspired by my ongoing study of the works of the great master painters; Velasquez, Cezanne, Constable, De Kooning and Auerbach to name a few.
