Maksim Kuznetcov

Originally from Russia, I lived about 10 years in UK and Spain. Since 2019 I permanently live and work in Australia and have a modest studio where I spend all my time often assisted by my dog.

My art interests formed quite early back in Russia, where I enjoyed and studied literature, poetry, visual arts and music. I have not received a formal art education (despite having 3 other degrees in chemistry, software engineering and business) however I consider myself self-educated in art through reading books on art history, sculpture, techniques.

In my work, I often try to find answers to existential questions like: where is beauty and joy in our lives come from?; why do we enjoy living if our strongest memories are of negative experiences?; what is the meaning of life itself? Reflecting on the changing society and non-political experiential observations I draw from my observations. I see human life as a flow of emotional states underpinned by spiritual experiences that we often avoid investigating and, therefore, understanding.

My goal in art is to be able to express emotional and spiritual experiences via a sculptural form. To achieve that I often experiment with the physical language, textures and colours of my sculpture.

In recent years I have been nominated as finalist in a few art competitions, including Sutherland/Hazelhurst art competition, UniSQ Biennial Art Award and Fisher’s Ghost Art Award

I have also been featured in a 2021 Interview for Foreign influence TV program.
